Fitting Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic shoes and boots are not supplied with insoles, they are sold separately.  Extra depth shoes or orthopedic shoes are designed to accommodate deformities and customized insoles per medicare guidelines.   The mid-sole of the shoe has been decreased in height so the upper part of the shoe does not have to be elevated as it had in the past. This allows the new diabetic shoes to be stylish and comfortable while meeting medicare guidelines. There are currently 3 types of insoles available, Gel, Heat Moldable, and Custom, each allowing you to customize the feel of your shoe.

The Gel Insoles and Heat Moldable insoles do not require any special molding and are ready to fit in your shoes.  The Gel insoles offer support through the arch and a full length cushy gel platform for increased comfort.  Heat Moldable insoles are made of a soft foam called plastazote. This material is extremely comfortable and cushy to the feet, however it is designed to wear out over time as the foam breaks down.  It is recommended you replace these insoles every 3-5 months depending on your activity level and how many miles you put on the insoles.

The custom molded insoles require impressions of your feet, this should be done by a professional.  If you have diabetic shoes with custom insoles by Dr. Comfort, the insoles will fit additional pairs of shoes the same size.  If you are having difficulties with your custom insoles, you should try a pair of the gel or heat moldable insoles.  It is common for the custom insoles to occupy too much space, making the shoes seem tight.
